Peridot Gemstone

The peridot gemstone is an intriguing stone whose color ranges from a deep vivid green to a light yellow green, transparent and wonderfully reflective due to its many facets. It is the birthstone for August and is associated with the lively greens of summer.

The peridot is one of the oldest gemstones known. Recorded history reports it mined on St. Johns Island as early as 1500 B.C.E., and its use both as talisman and jewelry is recorded throughout Egyptian history. Cleopatra is said to have worn the peridot instead of emeralds, but really, who knows? What we do know is that the peridot is a strikingly beautiful gemstone that is well-suited for all styles and occasions.

Peridot is a gem-quality forsterite, a member of the Olivine group. Olivine is a mineral series that ranges in composition from forsterite (magnesium silicate) to fayalite (iron silicate). The name Olivine comes from the Latin oliva, in reference to the mineral's olive-green color. Olivine is the simplest of the dark minerals. It occurs in basalts and gabbros, igneous rocks rich in magnesium and low in quartz, and makes up the primary part of the mantle of the earth. It forms in the upper mantle in the magma, anywhere from 20 to 50 miles deep. Volcanic eruptions often blow out bombs of this material. Olivine is also contained in meteorites.

The peridot is not mined as most gemstones, close to the surface, but is found deep underground, like a diamond. It's hardness ranges between 6.5 and 7, so it is moderately hard but care should still be taken to wash the dust from the stone before polishing.

Peridot is one of the stones believed to have been inlaid in the breastplate of the high priest, Aaron, whose story is found in the book of Exodus. The stone has a history of mysticism, and was used as a talisman in ancient times. It was thought to promote strong relationships and ward off evil spirits. Pliny the Elder suggested that for the talisman to work, the stone should be worn on the right arm. If worn properly the peridot would help dreams come to fruition, attract the love of one's life, and enable one to sleep like a baby.

Unprocessed stones are polished, cut, and faceted and then they are given the name of gemstones. Gemstones can be classified in various ways as follows-

• On the basis of the constituent element. E.g. rubies are composed of aluminum and diamonds are composed of carbon.
• On the basis of shapes of stones. E.g. cubic, trigonal, monoclinic etc
• On the basis of mineral species. E.g. beryl mineral species includes such gemstones as emerald, aquamarine, bixbite, heliodor, and moeganite.

A variety of gemstones are available in the market. Gemstones are available not only in the three primary colors of green, blue and red but also in various other hues.

Look Alike Gemstones

There are hundreds of gemstones that have corresponding look-alike in the wide variety of colors accessible. For instance take the following cases: in the realm of red gemstones you can find ruby, blistering jewelry like rubellite tourmaline, red spinel, red beryl and rhodolite garnet. If you are searching for blue gemstones you can try out tanzanite, sapphire, iolite, benitoite and indicolite tourmaline among others. Each of these gemstones has unique characteristics of its own. Tsavorite garnet, emerald and chrome tourmaline falls in the realm of green gemstones. Tsavorite garnet is very much similar to the clean green shadow of the bright green. On the other hand peridot and chrome tourmaline have an attractive yellowish green tinge.

Buying Gemstones

Before you purchase gems you must consider various things. For instance consider the sturdiness of gems. Not all gems are meant to be used for the same purpose. Studier ones and the lighter and more delicate ones can't be used for the same purpose. For instance burgundy is not as sturdy as ruby but can be effectively used in charms and rings. Tourmaline is not as durable as ruby, therefore should be used keeping this characteristic in mind. Delicate and soft stones like benitoite, tanzanite and iolite should be handled with greater care and are best suited for making pendants. Navy gemstones are best suited for trinkets and necklaces. Apart from the precious gemstones you can also avail of semi precious gemstones. If your funds are constrained you can opt for the semiprecious gemstones. These are easily available at your local jeweler's and you can use it to make rings. Though the semi precious stones are not as attractive as the precious gemstones, they are not exactly cheap looking either. Find an attractive one that suits your taste.

Gemstones- Original Vs. Fake

Purchasing gemstones can be quite a harrowing task. If you are not mindful and cannot tell the difference from one gemstone to the next then the chances of your being duped is very high. There is no dearth of unscrupulous dealers who can resort to fraudulent practices and give you inferior quality gems at the price of the original one. Thus it is very important that you buy gemstones only from a goldsmith and authorized gold dealers.

Enhance the Beauty of Diamond Rings With Colored Gemstones

Diamond rings set with gemstones are versatile pieces of jewelry. The gemstone can be a birthstone, it can mark a significant event or it can be fashionable, or any combination of these. Indeed birthstone rings set with diamonds are very popular as significant gifts for a special lady in your life.

Gemstones can be precious, such as diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire, or semi-precious, which pretty much accounts for everything else. And they come in a myriad of colors too.

Some, such as peridot gemstones, are idiochromatic. This means that their color arises from an intrinsic ingredient of the gemstone. Because the mineral or element responsible for producing the color is always integral to the structure of the gemstone crystal, such gemstones are "self colored" and they are always the same color.

Others, such as tourmaline, sapphire and topaz gemstones, are allochromatic. This means that their color comes from a small amount of trace element impurity which may be present in different qualities, absent or replaced by something else in different gemstone crystals. Because the coloring element within the gemstone varies, the birthstone gemstones range in color. Tourmaline, an October gemstone, can exhibit so many different colors that it is also known as the Rainbow Gemstone.

The glorious array of colored gemstones makes them highly desirable and they add a sensational splash of color when set with diamonds in a gemstone engagement ring. And whilst it is increasingly popular to choose your birthstone or zodiac gemstone to liven up an otherwise white diamond ring, there is nothing to say that you must choose to set your own birthstone into your engagement ring!

For example, peridot is the birthstone for August, and also the zodiac stone for Libra, and the sixteenth wedding anniversary gemstone. Amethyst is February's birthstone, Pisces' zodiac stone and the gemstone for both the sixth and the seventeenth wedding anniversaries! Yet both of these gemstones are hugely popular as accompaniments to diamonds for no other reason than they are stunningly gorgeous! They can even be set solo in solitaires for an unusual engagement ring.

Gemstone diamond rings also make sensational Right Hand Rings. The colored gemstones can be used as accents, or as central stones to accenting diamonds, in traditional styled cluster rings, trilogy rings and other styles. However it is essential that proper care is taken when cleaning the combinations of hard diamond and softer, porous gemstones, such as opals and peridots. Cleaning must always reflect the tolerances of the softer gemstone or the ring will become damaged.
